Dirty Gold War is a trip behind the scenes of a thriving industry. On one side, the displays of luxury goods; on the other, the appalling conditions of those cursed by dirty gold. A film that changes the viewer’s perception of this business and contributes to the fight for responsible ethics in gold.
From mine to window display, extreme misery to luxury brands and big banks, we follow the course of the “gold trail”. From South America to Switzerland, the country that refines and fashions the major part of the world’s dirty gold into bars. This film puts a little-known reality into perspective and reveals important issues about a gold rush that is continuing in the 21st century, in silence and indifference, regardless of the interests of indigenous peoples. The film also follows actors who are striving for change and trying to transform this industry.

Independent film maker, Daniel Schweizer was born in Geneva. In 1993, he made a much acclaimed first documentary film about AIDS, Vivre Avec awarded at Leipzig, selected at INPUT and the Félix Européens. On the same subject, two years later, he made the very moving Sylvie, which received a special mention from the jury at prix Europa. He is also the author of a documentary trilogy about the radical right, skinheads and neo-Nazis: Skin or Die, Skinhead Attitude and White Terror co-produced with Swiss Television and ARTE, which is an important account of this radical extremism. These films have been shown for the most part on European TV and have won a number of prizes. A privileged witness of social and political realities, Daniel Schweizer is immersed in his work. His films are demanding and committed and deal with the here and now. He has been trying for years to bring to the fore the plight of the Indians of Amazonia, threatened by the systematic plunder and pollution of their natural resources. In 2010, his feature documentary Dirty Paradise was a cry of alarm, rewarded with the FIFDH Grand Prix. Dirty Gold War goes even further, by revealing the mechanisms and complicities of the international dirty gold market.
